Marking a property line
A low brick wall along the edge of the lot gives you a clear boundary that looks like part of the house, not a fence you'll be replacing in a few years.
Planning a brick garden wall? We help you choose the style and brick for your yard, then lay it to handle weather from every side.

At AJ West Palm Beach Concrete & Masonry, brick wall installation in West Palm Beach means building a freestanding garden wall on its own footing. It carries nothing but its own weight, and it gets its look from the color and texture of the brick you choose.
Most people who call us already have a line in mind, along the edge of the lot, around a patio or out by the street, and a picture of the brick they want. The price moves with the wall's length, the style you pick, the brick, how far down we dig for the footing and how uneven the ground is. The schedule turns on when the brick arrives, the weather and, if your wall needs one, the permit. I'll give you the figure for your own wall when I come out and look at it.
I come out myself to look at your yard and the ground the wall will sit on, so the person pricing the work is the one who knows what it takes.
The masons who lay your wall work for us, not a crew pulled together that week, so the standard I talk about at the estimate is the one you get on the wall.
I spent years running schedules before I laid brick. If your wall is a bigger job than you thought, or a smaller one, I'll tell you up front instead of halfway through.
A garden wall takes rain and sun on both faces and across the top, so we lay it with the same care we'd give a house wall, because on a wall that exposed a small flaw is where it starts to come apart. First I walk the line with you and we stake it out. Then we dig down to firm, undisturbed ground and set the footing, since a wall that only carries its own weight still needs something solid under it. Our masons lay the brick course by course, check level and line as they go, and tool the joints so water runs off instead of sitting in them. If you want to reuse old brick, we check that it's fit for an outdoor wall before any of it goes in. We finish by cleaning the face and hauling off the dirt we dug out.
Some walls call for more than brick. Stone caps, a stone base or stone piers fall under stone masonry, and we can build them into the same job. If you have an older brick wall that's standing fine but losing mortar, brick pointing may be all it needs, and I'd rather tell you that than build you a new one.

A short wall around a patio closes in the space and gives people somewhere to sit, and with a solid cap on top it makes a handy ledge for drinks and planters.
Brick piers on each side of a driveway or front walk mark the way in, and they're easy to tie into a full wall later if you decide to extend it.
A brick wall can hide pool equipment, trash cans or the AC unit from the street and the patio, and unlike wood screening it won't rot or need staining.

Pace it off or pull a number from your survey. It doesn't have to be exact, but it helps me plan the visit and get a rough idea of the brick order.
Tell us if the line runs flat, rises along the way or drops off at one end, because the ground shapes which wall style makes sense and how the footing gets built.
If you have old brick stacked behind the house or you're hoping for a salvaged look, mention it, and I'll look the brick over when I come out.
These photos show brick colors, bond patterns, caps, piers and stone accents you can point to when we talk about your own wall.
Here are the questions people ask me most before they build a brick wall, from the brick itself to permits and price.
Only if it meets SW grade, the brick grade made for severe weather, and most used brick doesn't because it was often fired unevenly. If you're buying a salvaged lot, ask whether it meets that grade before you pay for it. If you already have old brick on hand, we'll look it over before any of it goes into your wall.
A pier and panel wall is usually the place to start, because its thin brick panels, braced by brick piers at intervals, adapt easily to changing ground. It's also relatively easy to build and economical. Where the finished ground sits at the same level on both sides, a straight wall that gets its stability from its own thickness is the other common choice.
No. Clay brick's color is part of the brick itself, so the wall doesn't need paint. Once exterior masonry is painted, most paint authorities agree it needs repainting every three to five years, so a bare wall saves you that upkeep. If white salt shows up on the face, one masonry maker's guide says dry brushing and plenty of clean water usually takes it off.
Brick and masonry work in West Palm Beach usually costs about $9 to $28 per square foot, a broad range for masonry work in general, not walls alone. Where your wall lands depends on its size, the style, the brick you choose and the footing it needs. I'll give you the figure for your wall at the estimate.
Check with the city before you build, because the City of West Palm Beach Building Division reviews building permit applications and oversees the inspections. In Palm Beach County, only homeowners and qualified contractors can pull a permit. When your wall needs one, we check with the office that covers your address, pull the permit and set up the inspections.
Ask which County or State license they hold and ask to see their liability and workers' compensation insurance, as Palm Beach County advises, then look at their past walls as closely as you look at the brick. The county also suggests holding the final payment until the permit is closed out. We're licensed and fully insured, and our work is backed by our satisfaction guarantee.
